THE WHY:

Education is a perpetual topic of debate and conversation; from the Oval Office and the halls of Congress to dinner tables across the country, education is on our minds. For good reason. We know that education has the potential to solve the world's most pressing issues, but only if that is its goal; if that is its intention… its design. For too long education has been relegated to being the mechanism for social reproduction. In the U.S. if a scholar is rich and white their schooling often reproduces and reinforces access to institutional power. Conversely, if a scholar is not rich and white their schooling often reproduces and reinforces the barriers to institutional power that perpetuate social inequity and injustice. It is in this reality that Justice by Design finds meaning. Justice by Design’s curriculum seeks to bring into focus the ideologies and worldviews at the root of social injustice, particularly what bell hooks calls the “white supremacist capitalist patriarchy,” for the sole purpose of dismantling them so that a new, more just future can begin to take shape.

MISSION STATEMENT:

Justice by Design strives to create curriculum that nurtures highly skilled critical thinkers capable of and motivated to be truth-tellers and change makers in our interdependent world.

At Justice by Design, all of our curricula are oriented towards social justice by which we mean curriculum that supports future change-makers to redistribute wealth, opportunities and privileges. We believe curriculum oriented toward social justice should facilitate both deconstructing intersectional systems of oppression and building loving, self-determined, and empowered identities oriented toward positive relationships and connectedness. In line with social justice, we believe in rigor, accountability to groups who have been oppressed, and truth telling by centering issues of racism, classism, sexism, ableism, any other ‘ism, and their intersections.
